The connections between atopic dermatitis and sleep disturbance

Hi.  I was unaware that atopic dermatitis has the symptom of sleep disturbance.  Is the sleep problem due to the discomfort caused by the other symptoms or is the sleep problem a separate symptom?  My 21-year-old has a small amount of eczema and he has trouble sleeping.  He has never blamed the eczema for his sleep problems.  Could there be a connection?  Thank you.

StuffywithCare, how frustrating that your son is having trouble sleeping! Is it occasional trouble sleeping or more chronic?

Difficulty sleeping can be caused by a lot of different things, eczema being just one. Has he talked to his doctor and maybe asked about having a sleep study done?

Thanks, K8SMOM2002.  My son complains about being tired all the time and having trouble falling asleep.  It's not like he never sleeps, though.  I don't know if he's asked the doctor–it's not like he has a great routine so the assumption is that he would just be told that he needs to be more disciplined.  Maybe yes, maybe no.

It's really tough when you are a night owl in a lark's world. And young people's sleep cycles aren't like other people's … so that can be even more of a problem.

Before he blames it all on "self-discipline," maybe he needs to figure out ways to engineer a better sleep environment …

It has this interesting statistic as well:

    ALLERGY BARRIERS

63% of Americans say fresh air free of allergens is important to a getting a good night’s sleep.

Could you talk with him about improving his indoor air quality in his bedroom? AAFA has a great blog post and infographic called .

    Hi Stuffywithcare! Welcome to AAFA!

Has your son tried anything to change his evening habits to make it more conducive for sleep? Not being on electronics, not watching tv in the bedroom…etc?

He's been out of the country for the semester and sounds like he may be doing better there.  Interesting.  Most recently his sleep is horrible due to jet lag and a surprise Christmas homecoming! <3 When he's truly back for second semester of college starting the end of January, then we will see how he's sleeping.  Thanks for asking.

  • Melissa G

Wow, out of the country for the semester! What a great experience! How have you been doing while he has been gone?

Uughh, on the jet lag! It could take him a couple of days for him to get back on track. I hope he continues doing well at the end of January.

Stuffywithcare, how did your son like being out of the country for the semester? Now that he has been back home for a little while, is he sleeping any better?
