Hereditery Angioedema vs. APD

Hi everyone,

I have Angioedema and am in the process of figuring out what type (Idiopathic, Hereditary, recently considering Hereditary type 3 because of swelling occurring during menstruation). I just came across APD - Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis and was wondering if anyone can tell me the difference between APD and Hereditary type 3 Angioedema. Just from reading a bit online it seems very similar.

Thanks!

Hi S. Kay! Welcome to AAFA!

How long have you been dealing with angiodema? This has to be very frustrating. What does your dr say?

Hi S. Kay! I don' t have personal experience with either, but did a quick online search too and found these two resources that may be helpful (you may have already found these)…Have you checked with the or the ? They are listed on within the autoimmune progesterone dermatitis section. They might be able to provide you with some insight about what the differences are?

I'm no expert, but from what I understand the Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis presents with a rash, while the Hereditary type 3 Angioedema (HAE) presents with swelling and can involve internal organs. HAE doesn't usually get better when you take antihistamines.

If you suspect hereditary angioedema, could you see doctor who is an expert in that to help you rule it in or out? You may be able to find more info about HAE at the .
