Who’s got a New Year’s Resolution?

In the spirit of the New Year, who's made a resolution?

I think one of mine is to get at least 5K steps in at least 5 days a week. I know, that's a rather wimpy step goal, but what with everything, that seems kind of bold right now.

What things are you hoping to do better on next year?

K8SMOM, I think that is a great resolution, its specific, and realistic to you, and I think those things make it attainable, go for it! ☺

I do not know what to make my resolution! I guess one thing I want to do is work on my bamboo binder more, and the second is really kick my homeschool preschool for my son into a new gear. Part of his Christmas present had new tools, and I am excited to add a little more discipline to our school days.

What is a bamboo binder? And yes, homeschooling does take so much discipline — that's why it's not for me! Do you think you will continue to homeschool your little guy or will you try sending him to a pre-K or Kindergarten when he's a little older?

My vertigo came back with a vengeance yesterday and the day before, and I wasn't able to work on my goal, but I intend not to be whipped! I have a couple of accountability partners and a walking buddy, so hopefully that will help.

My Bamboo Binder is a new hobby of making crafts with bamboo. I chose bamboo because most woods have some types of chemicals in them, and they are not as sustainable. Bamboo is super fast growing, strong, beautiful, and naturally preserving, you fo not have to kill the plant yo harvest a pole, and they are easy to grow (I have 2 plants and my parents have 5 or 6, we got them after my interest in crafting and learning how growing them helps slow down climate change). I harvested some poles locchan from a lady for free, with help of a friend amd my bamboo cutting japanese saw, we were able to take a jeep-ful of poles a while back, and I have been coming up with project ideas when I have less energy, and putting them in my binder, then actually making some of them when I do feel well. So far i have only made a few picture frames, a trellis, and I had a shelf outside but some of the other wood I used got weary, and it was wobbly, so I tossed it out. Right now I want to make an outdoor enclosure for our lizards.

I am pretty dedicated to homeschooling right now. I know I can be a good teacher, better probably than most in the public school system. I know I can provide my son with plenty of social experiences, there are 3 -4 homeschool co-ops in my area, we belong to one right now and have met great people. My son is on track with his learning right now, I have used online assessments, and I will either keep track with a school psychologist for yearly assessments, or follow the public school online K-12.com program that is now available, which runs with the same badic curriculum of public schools but offers more freedom in time and pace and offers more choices. We took a break for the holiday, of course, but I am excited to get back to a learning routine because we have fun doing it and I enjoy being part of the experience.

I am so sorry about the vertigo! I have read once that there is a relation between sinuses and sense of direction. I always believed it because I cannot do spinny rides and am prone to motion sickness. I wonder if there are pressure points or reflexology that could help?

My goal this year is to start budgeting. I want to track our spending for a few months and then see if I can come up with a budget.  I need to research spending tracker and budget apps.

Very interesting on the bamboo, Shea! As for homeschooling, I have no doubt you'll be able to do it. It sounds like you have a great plan.

As for me, discipline when it comes to making my DD do something she doesn't necessarily WANT to do (ahem, SAT prep, anyone??) is not my strong suit.

Jen, let me know how the budgeting tracker search goes … I should really do a better job of keeping up with what we spend. I just know it goes.

Well, I'm glad I didn't promise to make my step goal EVERY day, because yesterday I missed it by a lot! I only got 3K steps in. Today, I will try to do better.

My resolutions are to stop drinking coffee (I'm hoping this will help with some of the stomach issues I've been having) and lastly to be nicer to myself. I know that may sound odd but I am my worst critic. I need to set realistic expectations for myself and really challenge the way I think about things. And it's easier said than done. So wish me luck!

  • K8sMom2002

I could NOT give up caffeine. I don't drink coffee, but I drink buckets of tea.

Wishing you luck! How have you not been nice to yourself? I read something the other day that if we talked to other people the way we talk to ourselves, we'd be considered very rude!

  • K8sMom2002

Mandy, how have giving up coffee and being nicer to yourself been going? I might be able to do one without the other, but it would be hard for me to be nicer to myself without caffeine in the AM.

I haven't started yet.  At a minimum, though, I need to figure out what budget tracking app I'd like to use.  Any suggestions?

  • Jen

Thanks Cynthia.  Looks like there are some good options out there.  I saved that link to look at later to see which app might work best for us.

I am managing to keep my walking resolution finally! How about the budgeting, Jen? I need to do that, too!

  • Jen

Haven't started yet.   But…we are just about ready to put our old house on the market, so it is probably just as well that I waited.  Our finances will look a lot different when we're not paying 2 mortgages.

  • Jen

How is everyone doing with their resolutions?

Mandy  - Are you still managing to cut out caffeine?

Shea  -How are things going with the bamboo binder and homeschooling?
