I have his note but u guys are right, big dip. I messaged him. Thanks. Also I pick d up ext r lease 600 mg muck ex just now

  • Kathy P

I much prefer the extended release Mucinex over the multiple times per day stuff.

Gigi, that taper would scare me too! Hope you hear back from him soon. I too am a fan of a slow taper. Though, I haven't been off prednisone in a year…but when I have to increase its usually about 3 weeks or longer to get back to 10mg.

Brian, how did you figure out that the LABA/combo inhalers increased your mucous production? Was it something you noticed right away or gradual?

  • K8sMom2002

Gigi, I hope your doctor gets back to you so that you can be sure about the instructions.

Mandy, that's a great question about the mucus … Brian, I'm curious, too.

  • GigiGibson

He didnt and I called the office at 330 and asked the front desk gal to make sure he answered me. Guess I'll wing it.

  • K8sMom2002

Can you call his after hours number? Stepping down from prednisone is a tricky business — but I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.

But for other folks who may not know, here's an article from the Mayo Clinic about .

  • GigiGibson

Woke up with terrible left hip thigh and knee pain and when pain med didn't work took another 5mg. I will call today

  • K8sMom2002

Ugh on waking up in the middle of the night with pain! Glad you're going to call and get clarification. Let us know what the doc says! And

  • GigiGibson

He wants me to get through the five on 20 then changed to a real gentle taper after. I'm struggling right now. Did alb neb and boy much help. Doing ipratropium now. Took 10 mg pred so far.

  • K8sMom2002

I'm sorry you're struggling! I think a gentle taper is a very sensible approach. I hope what you're trying now will give you some relief soon!

Gigi, you mentioned having lots of mucus. Were you checked for a possible bacterial infection? Did they do a culture? Antibiotics might be in order if the mucus has changed color and is continuing to be really prolific. A sputum culture would confirm this.

I also find that the albuterol nebulizer helps me when I'm working on getting a flare under control. I use it right before bed and it helps me to breathe easier at night so I can sleep.

The Spiriva should help some as well – it's a bronchodilator. How much inhaled steroid are you taking now? You might want to discuss with your doc increasing the inhaled steroid as you taper off the pred, unless you're already at max dosage of inhaled steroid (Flovent/Qvar). That's what my allergist does with me when I'm tapering off pred. Inhaled steroids generally don't create the metabolic problems that oral steroids like pred do. And the maximum dosages of inhaled steroids are higher than you might think.

I'm not a doc – you'd need to check all of my suggestions with your physician. These are just things that work for me. But I've also found in the 28 years since I was diagnosed with this disease that doctors often need (and appreciate) intense feedback from their patients because asthma is tough to treat; it responds differently to different treatments depending on the patient. Bottom line is that only you really know what is truly working for you and what you tolerate well. A close relationship and dialogue with your doctor is essential!!

On a positive note, keep working on it! If you keep experimenting, you'll find what works and you'll get your asthma under control and reduce the number and intensity of your flares. And you'll be able to live a normal, active life. Keep reading and talking to your doc and others who are dealing with this disease and you'll find a path to better asthma control. That's a promise!!

  • GigiGibson

Thanks Brian! I hardly ever have mucus except when getting down on a taper to 10mg then I feel like a get stopped up with plugs of very tough mucus. I am on the guaif and doing my acapella and forcing fluids. I've got the pred taper plan and yes, he told me that I can use more budesonide to try to breeze through. I appreciate your experience and input very much.

  • Brian Cushing

Sure thing, Gigi. Keeping your tubes open while you're tapering is essential! Does the acapella device help clear the mucus? I know it's not a pleasant thing for others to hear, but forcefully coughing it out is also important after using the device. How many breathing cycles do you count each time you use it? I go for fifteen. I use it in the car while I'm driving, although my doc is absolutely horrified when I tell him this. But it's one of the few times when I'm alone and can do the intense coughing necessary without freaking out those around me!! PLEASE DON'T TRY THIS – I'M NOT RECOMMENDING DOING IT IN THE CAR!!

Sorry for yelling  - don't want to be causing any traffic accidents!!

I hope you find your way out of this flare soon.

Just found these emojis – they're cool!!

  • K8sMom2002

I was watching a video about it last night, and it mentioned that some people use it in conjunction with their nebs … did your doctor recommend that? And does it require a prescription?

  • GigiGibson

My doctor said he has only seen them used with cf pts but it wouldn't hurt to try it. It was oop but no rx needed. Like 40-50$. I just leave it on my desk and hit it 10-20 times a day.

  • K8sMom2002

Good to know that it's available and rather reasonable to buy since it's OOP. I know that when I have an upper respiratory infection, the mucus is what kills me. And since guaif is one of those drugs that tend to screw up my sleep (right up there with Benadryl and Sudafed), I really, really hate to have to take it. Anything that could help me with mucus would be a GOOD thing.

I'm definitely adding it to my list of things to ask my doc about. She's really, really good about patiently going through all my crazy questions!

  • Jen

Gigi – Now that you've had the pep acapella for a while, how often are you finding that you use it?

  • Jen

That's great that the diet is helping. Still, do you feel like the pep acapella is a good tool to have in your arsenal?

  • GigiGibson

Absolutely. Feel like it puts some oomph in your expiritory effort and that certainly is helpful in moving stuff. I just don't typically make much productive stuff except in tapering off pred. Weird.

  • K8sMom2002

I wonder if it's because the level of inflammation is changing in your lungs as you taper off … I know that most of the time mucus causes me major problems, it's when I'm coming off an upper respiratory infection.

I'm thinking something like your Acapella might really help me … like I've mentioned before, guaif's not really a good option for me, and I'm left with Vicks Vapo Rub and drinking copious amounts of water, per my doc's suggestion.

  • GigiGibson

U should totally get one. I was reading on a site today about the use of frankincense on my the chest for congestion. I'll find the link.

  • GigiGibson

No, I have got to find somewhere local to get some good oils, I'm sure there are several. Carrboro is the hippie capital of NC . I saw that lemon oil, eucalyptus, lavender and something else are good big repellents. My son agreed we can do that for grandlady so I've got to Plan a trip this weekend for some.

i was invited to a shower, a British tea at a hotel downtown and was so excited until yesterday's perfume assault. I decided there will be death traps everywhere at this event and backed out..

  • Kathy P

I'm sorry you had to cancel…it's so cruddy when we have to missthings like that.

  • K8sMom2002

Oh, Gigi … I hate that you missed something that sounded so cool. I've always wanted to attend a British high tea (well, except for the cucumber sandwiches. You could have mine. )

Any chance that you can have an encore with the bride/mom-to-be when you get your lungs back to behaving?

*shakes fist at thoughtless woman who made Gigi miss tea!*

  • GigiGibson

Well I wasn't so keen on the tea anywho but it is a baby shower and I will be visiting again soon. We had an hour together last Saturday.

  • K8sMom2002

I'm glad you'll have a sort of a second chance at the most important part of the event for you. It stinks that you had to miss a shower for a lady close to you.
