Spacer and Mask

Kyler has had hand foot and mouth (along with my other 3 kids!) for the last almost week. It is finally starting to clear up (thankfully!) And I was just wondering how to sterilize the space and mask…I had another spacer and mask that I boiled and apparently that wasnt the right answer because that expanded the plastic in the spacer and it no longer was sealed and it was useless. The doctor will call a new one in easy but my pharmacist never wants to give it to me and usually never has one in stock and it take at least 2 to 3 days to come in and they never have the infant mask. I only have one they gave us a adult one last time saying it's all they had take it or leave it. So I have one spacer and one mask. And it was a fight to even get that!

Oh, hugs! That has to have been a frustrating experience – first just surviving the week, and then the fiasco with the mask! Can you call the manufacturer to ask how to sterilize it?

Disinfect dirty surfaces and soiled items:

    • If you are able, first wash the items with soap and water, then disinfect them with a solution of chlorine bleach (made by mixing 1 tablespoon of bleach with 4 cups of water) or a cleaning product that contains bleach.

But some plastics and tubing aren't safe for contact with bleach … so definitely check with your manufacturer first.

There is also another product that I found when I was doing my Hurricane Michael prep — it's a  that is supposed to be safe even for food and baby surfaces and even without rinsing. But check with your doc and the manufacturer of the mask first.

I would contact the manufacturer to see how they suggest cleaning it.

    How is your son doing?

He is doing better! He's in the healing phase after all the blisters popped and it looks so horrible! I'm definitely ready for all this nasty sickness to get out of here!

Oh yes all 4 kids with hand foot and mouth! And Kyler has been having more flare ups then usual the last two weeks. And I ended up with a fever last night! I'm definitely ready to bleach this whole house!

Oh my goodness! How are you feeling now? And I would be ready to bleach the house too! You have to be exhausted!

I have a sore throat and I'm super tired but other than that I'm feeling better! Thank you for asking! I'm absolutely exhausted between flare ups sicknesses and my husband working overtime I'm definitely ready for a deep clean of the house and a relaxing weekend!

Yikes … any chance that you may have been gifted with Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease yourself? Kids can be waaaay too generous with the icky stuff.

At times like what you're going through, I'd just love to have a giant household steam cleaner  — ya know, take everyone outside and flip a switch to have the entire place steamed.

I hope you get some rest!

You should be able to just soak it in warm water and Dawn and it should be fine, I always add concentrated 5% white vinegar too.   If you want to add some hydrogen peroxide instead of vinegar that will certainly take care of any bugs on the spacer/mask.

The boys hands are all healing other then that the kids are all better! I however ended up getting the blisters in my throat so that isn't fun at all! But I'm just happy the babies are doing better! My kids are 6, 4, 2, and 1.

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry you got blisters in your throat! That had to be very painful! Ouch!

I love that my kids are close in age….18, 16 and 14. But when they were younger it was definitely hard when they were sick…
