Severe Weather Check-In March 2019

March is definitely roaring in like a lion! Severe storms on the west coast causing flooding, snow and ice on the east coast.

It went from snowing in the morning to pouring down rain the afternoon.

Yep yep!!  We've had so much rain here in SoCal. Everything is so green!! But the recent burn areas are having mudslides and flash floods, super stressful after having survived massive wildfires. Despite good air quality, the high humidity and colder than usual temps are leading ne to use my ventolin more than I prefer.

  • Melissa G

Oh my, Amber! I hope things settle down soon.

It is snowing here again. We are supposed to get 4-6", at some point we could get some ice too.

  • Marie E Natzke

And here in Chicago its 17 degrees out. By morning we are supposed to be below zero wind chill again..stay safe out there every one

  • K8sMom2002

Feeling very blessed that our area of Georgia escaped the severe tornadoes that other folks have had in the Southeast. Hoping everyone has their preparations in place for any unexpected weather!

  • Pljohns

WE have escaped the tornado's also-they hit farther South of us.  Central AL was spared but we need a boat!  We had over 10" of rain in a week and are right now almost 11" above normal for the year.

Was going over my pred with a very dear friend last night-when you can't use inhalers and your meds have to stay refrigerated, it brings a whole new set of things to think about.  Electricity is a must with a neb and my med-or a generator (which we have) and a car adapter for my neb

  • LK

Good to hear that you made it through the stormy weather in good shape, too, Lynn!!

Very good point about how we need to have a different mindset about what to do if we lose power.  What meds have to stay refrigerated, what will we use for electricity for a nebulizer, etc.

  • K8sMom2002

Yikes on the rain, Lynn! I hope you don't have more rain in the forecast?

I seem to dimly recall that you have a great ice chest/thermal box that you took with you on an airline flight … could that be part of your back-up plan?

  • Marie E Natzke

I have a battery powered nebulizer. It's from Omron. I never have to worry just make sure I have a set of double AA batteries. I'll attach a picture of it. It's small will fit in purse.

Miami has thankfully escaped any dreadful weather- 80F most days even in winter! I hope everyone stays safe

  • Deborah Bartlett

It was 17 degrees this morning, with a real feel of 3 degrees. It is supposed to get even colder overnight,  tonight.

Everyone take care and keep warm!

  • Pljohns

UGH Deborah-thats COLD.  We had 21 this morning warming to 40 today and finally 3 days in a row of NO RAIN and 2 days of SUNSHINE

  • LK

The forecast is for ABOVE freezing highs for the next week!!  Wow!!

  • Deborah Bartlett

UGH is right Lynn! Glad you can see some sunshine! Now we are due for snow to start the day Sunday…changing to rain for the rest of the day, in the 40s.

  • K8sMom2002

We went from 80s to freeze warnings. Southern weather is just so . It can't make up its mind. And I hear that we may have a chance of severe weather again this weekend.

Marie, looks like you are all prepared — and I'll bet you have plenty of double A batteries on hand!

  • Melissa G

We are supposed to get more snow tomorrow, but just an inch or so. As much as I like winter and snow, I am ready for spring!

  • LK

Sending gentle, warm, dry  to everyone who is having inclement weather!!

  • K8sMom2002

I'm thinking many of our friends here are facing some really awful weather …

A massive Plains storm became a bomb cyclone Wednesday, March 13, setting new preliminary all-time low-pressure records in a few locations as it produced blizzard conditions and damaging winds.

Meteorologists refer to a strengthening low as "bombing" out or undergoing bombogenesis if its minimum surface pressure drops by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours or less.

Some folks' asthma is triggered by dropping barometric pressure and sudden weather changes … mine definitely is!

What preparations have you made? I know it helps me to review AAFA's great blog post  whenever the weather forecast looks dicey!

  • Emelina

Holy cow, thanks Cynthia, I hadn’t thought of the barometric pressure as a trigger. Maybe that’s why me and my nebulizer are like this 🤞today. For weather fans, it really was a gorgeous and big storm. The blizzard is still raging outside with horizontal snow and everything is shut down across the state!

  • LK

Oh, my goodness!  That's some storm!  Hope you, Em, and everyone in it's path are warm and safe!

  • Marie E Natzke

We are on the tail end of this storm that you had yesterday, are winds are picking up then suddenly it's calm for a while. Later on today it's supposed to be rainy and very windy with possible heavy thunderstorms and low possibility of a tornadoes. It's very gloomy out and it's 57 now.

Hope everyone is safe after yesterday's storm

  • Emelina

Yikes Marie, stay safe. Thunderstorms and tornadoes take the level of scary to a whole new level. Hope the storm passes and the sun comes out soon!

  • Marie E Natzke

Well we didn't have tornadoes but did have boughts of heavy rain and thunder with a little hail. Some strong winds at times. It's dropped over 10 degrees in the last couple hours. By tomorrow it will be in the 30's with snow!!!! Come on April I've had enough snow and cold already!!

  • Pljohns

WOW Maire-I don't think I could survive with that many changes in that short of time!  We had thunder and rain last night but the bad stuff split and went around us-thank goodness

  • Emelina

Hoooray! I think winter is finally over here! 50 degree temps are in the forecast and the snow is melting! Funny thing, I was driving with the windows down and considered turning on the ac. It was about 45 today, but that’s like 50 degrees higher than 1 month ago! Midwest life

  • Melissa G

It was gorgeous the last two days, then a storm last night brought the cold weather back. It is chilly and windy out today.

  • Emelina

It’s 37 and beautiful! The sun is out. The snow drifts are still melting but people are out without coats, the kids have returned to the park, and the birds have come back to my feeder! Ahhh! I think spring is really coming! 😍 thank goodness! It has been a long hard winter. I am ready for warmer temperatures and gentler weather!

  • LK

Thanks Melissa!  North of us they have close I-29 due to it being flooded from St Joseph, Missouri clear up to Omaha, Nebraska.  If you are going from Kansas City to Omaha you have to go up I-35 to Des Moines, Iowa and the west to Omaha.  It turns a three hour trip into a five hour trip.

Hope those in the flood areas are safe!!

  • LK

Finally!!  DH will have to mow the yard for the first time this spring.  Had to turn on the air conditioner this afternoon.  Just getting stuffy and warming up in the house.

  • Emelina

Wow! Thunderstorms are lighting up the night sky and the familiar rumble of thunder has returned. Midwest thunderstorms are amazing. I’m not sure what season it is though? Today it was 65. Next Thursday when I’m supposed to drive an hour away for full PFTs … it’s going to be 25 with moderate snow accumulations predicted! 🤞cmon spring, kick winter out!

… holy cow a storm cell just went right over us. I may have jumped out of my skin a few times and hidden under my covers! It has been about 10 minutes now of continuous rolling thunder and night sky flashes. Mother Nature is out to impress tonight.

  • LK

Em,  That rolling thunder can be quite eerie.  Had a close lightning strike a few times.  Sure wakes a body up!  Hope you are safe!

  • Emelina

Lisa, yup, definitely eerie. But we’re ok, the windows have been power washed and the patio scrubbed clean by the wind 😝. I’m hoping the driveway got scoured too … we usually kick the snow and gravel off the cars in our little driveway before parking them in the garage, so let’s hope, lol!

  • LK

Glad you all are safe!  I had forgotten that we used to do that when we lived in northern Illinois!  We would stop outside and get off the built up snow and slush from around the tires so as not to bring it into the garage.  Memories!

  • Emelina

Bright and sunny today! Found this and it made me laugh. Oh my! Wednesday’s storm has been upgraded from moderate to heavy snow accumulations!

  • Melissa G

Looks like the Mid-West is going to get slammed with some snow! Blizzard warnings are in effect. For anyone in that area, are you getting prepared for the inclement weather?

  • Emelina

Yup, predicting 15 inches of snow, white out conditions and > 45 mph winds. I went to the store yesterday and moved all of my medical appointments to today so I can sit in my house in my slippers and watch the storm with a cooking spoon in hand! So worried about the communities around us. Those that got it hardest from the last bomb cyclone/blizzard storm ulmer are set to get hit hard again. 🙏 for a change and a weakened storm.

  • Emelina

This storm keeps getting stronger and it is arriving early! Now a storm/blizzard warning. Supposed to start tonight and blow through Thursday. I’m going to keep all of the kids home and hunker down. Better to keep the family safe and warm.

on the upside, it could be worse right? It could be a tornado … or King Kong? 😛

better than that debbie: daquiri ice cream 🍦

It could be worse. It could be an asthma attack. 🙏

Good idea to keep the kids home and hunker down. Get ready. Be prepared. 😨
