Scented trash bags…ugghh!

My wonderful husband went to the store for me and on the shopping list were kitchen trash bags. Fast forward a few days, I come home after taking Bekah to choir practice and notice a "smell", but I couldn't figure out what it was and where it was coming from. The smell wasn't obnoxious but wasn't exactly pleasant, and it was driving me crazy, especially since I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. We don't burn candles or wear perfume, so this really had me perplexed.

I was doing some cleaning and went to grab a trash bag and BAM, as I pulled a bag out of the box, the smell hit me right in the face. The dreaded scented trash bags….why in the world did dh buy those?  I messaged him and asked him why, he said that is all they had.  We have four grocery stores, a Wal-Mart and a Target within 15 minutes of our house, it's not like he couldn't have gone to another store.

The smell of scented trash bags really sets off my asthma and allergies and for days I couldn't figure out what was triggering my flares!

What household products have you encountered that you didn't realize were scented or that the scent cause an allergy/asthma flare?

Oh my gosh. Last year my Mom gave me some magazines she was done reading. I don't know how she didn't realize this. The bag was some Gain scented thing. ASTHMA ASTHMA ASTHMA ATTACK BIG TIME!!!!!! Took me a good 20 minutes to get the attack under control. I took the whole bag of magazines and tossed it in the back of DH's work van. He can throw stuff in the dumpster at work. The scent was overpowering and unpleasant. I called my Mom and asked why did she do that? I got really, really sick. Oh—I'm sorry, she said. She smelled the box of bags. Oh my God!!! Oh…I am so sorry. Well, it was a good thing I was able to get it under control. I told her to never give me anything scented again.

Solid air fresheners are a no no here. So are scented candles, aerosol spray bathroom cleaners, ammonia, strongly scented dryer sheets, PERFUME AND COLOGNE…and there are others. Glad this was brought up.Hopefully some folks who are unaware will read this thread and realize that asthma sufferers cannot tolerate fragrance!

Lynn, I certainly don't understand why people want to use them, they smell gross!

Deborah, oh my goodness, that had to be so scary! Very glad you were able to get the attack under control.

Deborah-UGH-This time of year especially, EVERYTHING seems to have those awful perfume inserts in them.  I've learned to shake the bag before I even open it and if anything rattles, it doens't even get opened.

Anything with scents is a big no no for me too-I don't clean with cleaning products-I use a hand steamer-at 220 degrees of hot steam, it disinfects everything and cleans really well too.  All of my dryer sheets are unscented as well and I'm quite sure Fabreeze is a wonderful thing, but not in ANYTHING in my house.  I have found I can SOMETIMES burn fruit only candles (mainly strawberry or peach) but only 1 brand because they aren't strong and have no "perfume" with them-just the smell of the fruit but no way on any air fresheners or anything else.

My MIL is determined to put on her personal products-she has one set that has the bath gel, lotion, powder in and then she buys the matching perfume and GEEZE does it STINK.  She's quit wearing it all around me but somehow thinks just 1 might be OK-WRONG-I get that people like to wear things and they have every right but not around me or in my house.

Dh bought a new lotion for his eczema, not sure why, we already have some here… Anyway, he came downstairs last night and was rubbing his hands together and I got a whiff of something and I finally asked what did you put on?! He told me he had purchased a new hand cream and was trying it out. It was heavily scented…. I kindly reminded, well maybe not as kindly as I should have, that we have unscented hand cream and he needs to use that instead, that what he had just used was too scented for me.

Kathy, I am not sure what has gotten into him, normally he is the one getting upset about "smelly" stuff…..I think his allergies/sinuses have been bothering him so badly he just can't smell well right now. Which isn't helping the rest of us.

DH over here picked out a lotion pump labeled Sensitive Skin. But not Fragrance Free! It was heavily perfumed!!! It was a Nivea lotion. I told him to keep it in his work van to use. Too much scent = me being sick!!!

We needed a new lint roller, so dh and Josh went to the store. Luckily, dh paid attention this time…he saw scented lint rollers! I have to say I have never seen scented lint rollers before. Why in the world would anyone need a scented lint roller?

  • Pljohns

UGH-I totally agree Melissa-WHY would anyone want a scented lint roller!  Glad your DH noticed and didn’t bring it home-

  • Deborah Bartlett

No one would need a scented lint roller. That's ridiculous. I have seen scented toilet paper holders.

I, like many others, prefer and have to buy the non-scented items.

Companies have learned to be sneaky about where they put the fact that it is scented too and some things I now have a hard time finding unscented items.  If people only had a clue about what it does to those of us with respiratory issues/allergies.

Oh, I know. Scent is tucked into everything now. It is hidden away. It should be an option, not a must have. 😠

  • Pljohns

totally agree-I know we are the minority that doesn't like that junk but we should have that option
