prednisone

does anyone know how long it takes your liver enzymes to get back to normal once you get off prednisone?  The doctor yesterday wanted to check mine because it's been almost a year but I just got of prednisone 2 weeks ago and I knew they would be high.  I meant to ask him how long it took and forgot to

That's a good question … your pharmacist may know the answer to that, and might be a bit easier to get in touch with than your doctor.

I did a quick Google dive, and I found this article on the National Institutes of Health:

As one of its works cited, it included this:

Steinberg H, Webb WM, Rafsky HA. Hepatomegaly with fatty infiltration secondary to cortisone therapy: case report. Gastroenterology 1952; 21: 304-9.  (14 year old boy treated for rheumatic fever with cortisone developed marked hepatomegaly beginning on day 6, and by day 43 liver biopsy showed fat and inflammation, which resolved rapidly upon stopping therapy; liver biopsy 20 days later showed normal liver without steatosis).

That sounds promising to me, Lynn!

Another possibility … could you reach out to any lab techs that you know? They may be able to tell you that as well since they ought to know what would make a lab result abnormal.

I gave up and sent the doc a portal message last night but he hasn't responded yet.

I'm not sure-it's a new PCP (doc next door)-I sent it last night and it hasn't been answered yet-

Hoping you'll get an answer today! I think if he hasn't answered it by the COB today, then it would be appropriate and reasonable to call the nurse and ask if the message has been seen and forwarded to the doc.

I just checked my portal and he said they should be back to normal now and come on over and get blood drawn so I guess I have that to do now too

  • K8sMom2002

Ugh on the blood draw, but yay that they should be back to normal. I hope everything is A-OK.

  • Pljohns

So, I went and had blood drawn yesterday so we will see how the levels are.  I don't know if the labs will be back today or Monday but at least they are done.

Labs are back and almost everything is WELL within limits-the alkaline phosphotase was up (and by what I read, it can be caused by anti-inflammatory meds and/or, NSAIDS and a lot of other meds I don't take) and it was only 3 points out of range and has been in that range before. My white blood cells were through the roof (guess I still have a little infection somewhere) but everything else was super good~  What a HUGE relief

Ugh on the WBC being elevated, but yay on everything else! Will you be circling back to talk to your doc?

  • LK

Glad most of your lab results were good!  One less thing to worry about!    Will your doctor do further testing to determine what sort of infection is causing your white blood cell increase?
