Have you been attacked by an army of dust bunnies?

So we live in a very dusty area — I could sweep the house twice a day, and I'd still have dust. Plus, my Roomba is in need of a new battery, so we've been having to do the sweeping the old-fashioned way.

I'd gotten behind with my sweeping, doing a lick and a promise, and I'd gotten used to DD helping me sweep for me the past few weeks. Now that she's in school again, until she gets things into a better rhythm, she's handed the broom back to me.

This morning, I swept — and either she hadn't been sweeping too well or an army of dust bunnies has invaded. I swear, I needed a front end loader to remove the dirt!

How are you defending yourself against your own army of dust bunnies? What are your favorite shortcuts to make cleaning easier?

Cynthia, I read the title of your post here and burst out laughing!  It could have been written for my house!    I was doing such a good job "swiffering", vacuuming, etc. until a few weeks ago when there was a tough weekend and have not been able to get back on a good schedule of cleaning yet.

One way I "sweep" the hardwood and tile floors is to dampen the Swiffer dry pads with water and then use them on the floors.  It seems to keep the dust from becoming airborne and there is no scent.  Some times I use the Bona mopping pads that are pre-moistened on the hardwood floors.  They don't really have a scent so most of the time they don't bother my lungs.

If I may add another question along these lines?

Have any of you found a good way to clean horizontal window blinds?  I have tried dusting, vacuuming, and other ways and all ways seem to either just move the dust around or it is impossible to actually clean all of the blinds.  Thanks!

I will stand up and testify that I have some blinds like that!

In desperation, I have in the past taken them down, filled the tub with hot soapy water and doused 'em. But it really depends on whether the blinds are okay to be in the water. Sometimes they're not.

I recently saw this on Pinterest …

And then there is , a microfiber wash cloth and either a dryer sheet (unless it's unscented, NOOOO ) or a wet disposable swiffer type of pad.

If you like the glove deal, but you want the microfiber to catch all the dust, I guess you could sew a "sock" out of a microfiber washcloth, or find a microfiber glove in the car detailing department.

We have dog hair bunnies that are more like kangaroos!  With 3 dogs, it’s a never ending battle.  We absolutely WORE OUT a roomba so now I vacuum a few nights a week.  Haven’t found any secrets to get rid of them-they seem to invade everywhere!

    Thanks, Cynthia!  Good ideas!

Lynn,  Can't imagine how it is with 3 dogs!  We had enough hair when we just had one lab!

Oh, this made me laugh, Lynn! Glad I'm not alone in battling the dust bunnies! If I could just get in the habit of sweeping/vacuuming twice a day whether it needed it or not — because, believe me, it needs it.

Lisa, I'm going to try the tongs thing with just a microfiber cloth. I have a set of tongs, and I have a microfiber cloth or two (I got a pack for free at Harbor Freight with a coupon when I was buying something else), so I can wrap the tongs with the squeezed out damp microfiber and see how that works. Not sure if I have any rubber bands because those guys get tossed pretty quickly since DD has a latex allergy.

You ladies are hilarious! We don't have blinds anymore, we have rollershades. Sorry I can't help you there.

We have carpet through out our house. I know, I know…I wish we had hardwood floors, but when we replaced carpet a long time ago dh veto the hardwood floors.  We vacuum all the time and use swiffer dusters to dust. And dh replaces the furnace allergy filters all the time. But I digress, it seems like the dust is always there.

We ripped out the carpet years ago and replaced everything with laminate flooring. I've been known to toss a microfiber cloth on the floor and slide it with my food along the baseboards down the hallway!

We only have the horizontal blinds in the kids' bedrooms – and those don't get dusted often  Most of the other windows just have a valence or a valence and half curtain. We are lucky that all the main windows face into a protected back yard. I have sheers on my front dining room and take those down to wash. I put up the cellulose accordion shades in my living room (that gets used as a guest room as that is where the pull out couch is), but those are usually clipped all the way open.

Now I'm realizing that I need to wash curtains!

It kills me … when my sister comes into help me do seasonal cleaning or a white tornado clean sweep in case company is coming, the first thing she wants to do is wash the curtains. But I have to admit, it makes the place look and smell better.

I didn't get a chance to sweep this morning, and you can tell! Hopefully I can sweep this evening before bed while I chat with my sister.

My sis prefers vacuuming her hardwood floors. But to me, I hate lugging the vac out when I can sweep. I loved my Roomba … one day, I want a Roomba that will sweep AND mop.

My mom always finds things wrong with my house. I finally told her if it bothers her that much, than she is more than welcome to clean it.

I have cleaned the curtains in our living room. But until I can turn our air off, I am not doing any "fall cleaning".  I want to be able to wash walls, and wash curtains soon.
