Have medications like nexium powerfully and positively impacted your asthma?

my doctor has threatened to put me on a two week, bid trial of nexium to see if I have silent gerd that is keeping me from having better asthma control. I just went ahead and bought it and started today.

I would like like to hear your experiences with this if you happened to begin a PPI during asthma management. Did it help?

Thanks!!!!

It definitely has for me. Reflux is a huge trigger for me. I remember when I was pg w/ my ds, reflux was rampant. I had to be on both reflux and asthma controller meds. Since then, I've done stints where I'll take a PPI for a couple weeks if my reflux is running amok. Now that I've discovered what foods trigger reflux for me, I don't often need to take a PPI, but I still do occasionally take an H2 blocker when flared.

This was new for me to learn — how is it that reflux triggers asthma? Does it start the cough? (If I ever start coughing, it can trigger an asthma attack, or at least it feels that way to me.)

One way (that has been explained to me) is that the reflux can get aspirated into the lungs causing irritation.

Gigi – I have definitely heard people say that reflux triggers their asthma.  Let us know how it goes w the ppi.

I have been on something similar for over a year. I think acid wise and how my stomach feels it has been helpful. In relation to the asthma, I am not sure as things have been relatively the same for the last 6 months. All that I know is that when I am off of it, I have issues with my stomach. I have undergone numerous tests including GI motility testing so I am anxious to see if I have silent reflux.

Oh, Mandy, NG tubes and me … we just don't gee-haw, if you know what I mean.  Glad you survived!

When do you think you'll get the results??

I have been on the reflux meds and no change in sx so I doubt it's one of my problems. Will give it another week

I've been somewhat sob this evening. Taking sharp deep breaths every now and then. Usually that goes into attack but just keep randomly happening this evening. ???? I did a neb and only helped about 30 – 45 minutes. Just took my inhaler.

    That's not good Gigi….

Mandy – did they how long it would be to get the results analyzed? I'm not sure I'd do well w/ an NG tube. I got an impression done yesterday for a new night guard and the orthodontist hit my gag reflex a number of times!

Gigi, how long did the doctor say the reflux meds would take to have an effect? I know chasing down these mysteries must be extremely frustrating for you!

He was going to try me on meds a week if all those tests were negative. When the rmsf was + he didn't order the reflux med. I bought it anyway and told him I was one it. I didn't see any difference in four days so I stopped

Sorry you are having so many issues Gigi! I hope you get things under control soon. Take it easy!

I do have some reflux. My doc told me this am but nothing that would explain/be a cause for my continued symptoms.
