Epi-Pen Shortage Update

Our manufacturing partner Meridian Medical Technologies, a Pfizer company, continues to experience interruptions in the production of EpiPen® (epinephrine injection, USP) 0.3 mg and EpiPen Jr® (epinephrine injection, USP) 0.15 mg Auto-Injectors. Over the past few months, there has been intermittent supply of EpiPen at wholesalers and pharmacies. We are actively exploring several options with Pfizer that would help stabilize supply. We will continue to provide updates, including timing for resolution, as we receive them from Pfizer.

Pfizer's statement is available

We appreciate how important it is for individuals with life-threatening allergies to have access to epinephrine auto-injectors, and understand the challenges this situation continues to pose for patients. Pfizer is working hard to increase production and stabilize supplies, but until this occurs, supplies of EpiPen® 0.3 mg and EpiPen Jr® 0.15 mg Auto-Injectors, and the authorized generic versions of these strengths, will continue to vary from pharmacy to pharmacy and may not always be available.

For those of you that have epi-pens, have you had issues getting them re-filled?

I called 11 pharmacies and none had them-some chain ones and some mom and pop ones and they all had ESTIMATED delivery dates of antwhere between Nov-Jan,  I finally called sams club and they had 1-so I quickly had the script transferred and he held it for me.  He said after that, they were being told it would be after the first of the year.

I wanted to get a second set of the epi-pens so my pulmo called in the prescription.  When I went to pick it up, the generic brand wasn't available and the pharmacy said they hadn't received any for three weeks and weren't sure when any would be in, so I went ahead and purchased the non-generic.  She didn't know when they would be getting any shipments in the future.  Guess that is better than her saying that some should be coming in and people expecting them and then they not get them delivered.

Lynn, that is great that the Sam's club pharmacy held them for you!

Lisa, I am so glad to hear you could get a second set!

when I refilled ours in June, I was able to get one set right away, but the second set was on back-order for two weeks.

My son to be 10 year old has SEVERE peanut and tree nut allergies as well as asthma. I did not have an issue getting epi-pens. I requested 2 set of epi-pens but my insurance is hesitant on approving the other refill being i just got one filled. However they only gave me one inhaler for his asthma, with NO refills.

Cnyree-that's AWFUL that you have no refills on his inhaler! I was lucky to find one set of epi pens in town and I got them only because the pharmacist held them for me.  No one else in town has them and some were giving me ESTIMATED delivery dates of after the first of the year!

    Welcome Cnyree!

I have never heard of only giving one rescue inhaler and no refills!  May be good to call and ask his doctor if there was a mix up with the prescription?

Glad were able to find epinephrine auto-injectors to have enough.

Ugh on the no refills on the inhaler. I had a doc inadvertently not include refills on a med I was taking daily. I'd have to call in for a refill every single month! Finally, I asked him to resend the Rx to the pharmacy with refills. It was just a missed check box. I'd call the doc and explain and ask if they can fax in a new Rx.

    Welcome, Cynree, and how frustrating!

Was it the insurance that didn't approve the refills or did the inhaler come with no refills?

If it's no refills on the inhaler prescription, I like Kathy and Lisa's suggestions — could you call the doctor's office and say, "Hey, I noticed there were no refills listed. Could you call in or fax a prescription?"

  • CNyree

It didn’t come with any refills. Usually I get two refills at a time for his inhaler and his epi-pen. Being that I need an epi and so does the school and my parents. Since the last time we got the epi refilled I changed insurances and I’m not sure if they will pay for the other refill for the epi to get filled. I will go by the pharmacy and check bc it is needed. Also will call about the inhaler too. I thought it was so odd!

When we re-fill our epi's they have to be a week apart. Not sure why, just how our insurance works.

@CNyree What happened with the refills on the epi's and inhalers? Have you been able to get them refilled?
