Ear nose and throat doctors (ENT)

My experience with ENT doctors haven't gone so well. When I get to a certain point they don't want to see me. They feel it's my allergies and don't want to see me anymore. I'm basically wasting their time, as they so kindly tell me (not)…

I was at the allergist office yesterday. They didn't want to refill the buedesomide for me because it's not their field, which I was ok with.  The Dr. Did give me a name of another ENT to go and see. This Dr isn't in the same medical group as the last 2 were. So tomorrow I will call and make an appointment with him.

I'm all congested again. I don't know if I caught something being in the ER with my sister or if it's just allergies again, triggering my sinus to flair up again. Interesting thing is the allergist I saw yesterday out on Dr script to evaluate me for chronic sinusitis and not chronic rhinitis. Now the next problem is if I am sick I can't take my next humira injection.

So how long did it take any of you to be correctly diagnosed? What therapies were you or are you still on?

What medications are you currently taking to help with your allergy/sinus issues?

For me, if I start having allergy/sinus issues, I need to add in a decongestant, do sinus rinses and use a nasal inhaler.

Have you had any sinus testing done, x-rays or ct scan?

  • Marie E Natzke

Allegra, xyzal, nasal rinse, allergy shots,

yes to the ct, normal except a small deviated septum

    camera up the nose, normal,

nasal sprays have opposite effect I tend to close up not open up after continual use of them.

I had to stop montelukast was having horrible itching. Itching stopped when I stopped taking the drug.

I'm limited what I can take due to the humira so no prednisone supress immune system too much of I was on both

  • Melissa G

Has your doctor ever suggested a decongestant? I take Mucinex D when I need to take a decongestant.

  • Marie E Natzke

Melissa I can't take mucinex it makes my cough worse. I've been using my nebulizer the last 2 days it has my cough under control. I'm just not sure what's wrong. Either I have a virus or its my asthma. I'm beginning to think maybe the Humira is interfering with my inhaler. I have a an appointment with the new ENT March 23rd. Will see what he has to say.

  • Marie E Natzke

Actually I ended up in the ER this morning. I have a viral infection. At least it's not my asthma. But it is my sinuses again. They are draining down my throat triggering coughing.

  • LK

Oh, Marie!    Sending     and more   your way!!  Hope you are feeling better soon!

  • K8sMom2002

Oh, Marie! I'm glad you were able to get some medical attention, but what a rotten way to start the day!

And sinus drainage/post nasal drip can definitely be a trigger for asthma.

I'm hoping this ENT will have a plan forward and some new ideas. One thing that is in my sick plan is using a plain decongestant, and it's in my DD's as well. A sinus infection is a sure trigger for me.

Any way you can get bumped up and see the ENT sooner since you ended up in the ER?

  • Marie E Natzke

Still coughing!! I can't get it under control. I took some cough medicine this afternoon hopefully this will stop it. Keep your fingers crossed!!

No I don't want to ask for more time off of work. I missed 2 days because of my sister and the day I was in the ER. I'm wondering if the Humira has changed my inflammation level for my asthma as well as the arthritis, they are both autoimmune diseases. Maybe I need a change?? But this weather isn't helping any at all.

Tonight I figured out what is bothering me. It's how dusty the house is. My Mom and other sister get mad at me when they see me cleaning and then tell me they'll do it during the week. But then they don't take care of it during the week. I hesitate hiring someone because of my sister with mental problems, but yet I can't live in a dusty environment. I've tried talking to them about this but I don't really get anywhere. If I push too much I'm the one not being reasonable or not being fair. Tonight after dinner I realized the dust inside the radiator in the bathroom and back porch where do full of dust it turned the swifter black.  Does anyone have any suggestions how I can approach them?😷😵😱

  • Melissa G

That is a tough one Marie. Can you explain it is triggering your asthma? Do you wear a mask if you are doing any housework?

Would they be willing to watch this ?

  • LK

That really is a tough one Marie.  I am sorry it's gotten so dusty!    For my DH it is a matter of his sense of time and mine do not agree.  Unless I ask him to do it now and specifically say "Please do it right now"  he will agree to do it but in his mind it is for another day.  Sometimes that day is in the near future and sometimes not!  What if you had a daily chore chart that would spell out what needed to be done each day for your mom and other sister?  Maybe just one or two a day?  Perhaps have them choose which days are best for cleaning?     That way they might think they are coming up with the idea which always helps!

  • Marie E Natzke

    Melissa G and LK

Yes I wore a mask Sunday when I cleaned the radiator cabinet's. They know dust bothers me, but because of my arthritis my Mom didn't want to ask me. That's a good idea LK, but my sister was never one to clean. She thinks a good cleaning once every 6 months is ok.  When I'm feeling better I'll have to start cleaning myself. Now that I'm sick I'll have more to say. In the past when I started to clean I was given a hard time because I was either disturbing them or they didn't feel like helping me and then they'll tell me they'll do it during the week. My Mom  started talking about my arthritis and I told her that it's worse for me living in a dusty house.  I don't think they understand about my being on humira  and the disease I have what it does to the immune system,  its either that or they don't want to deal with anything else, meaning the stress of dealing with my other sister has overwhelmed them they can't handle this with me. I checked into hiring someone to clean and it's too expensive.

  • K8sMom2002

Hugs … it's so tough when you're dealing with many different priorities.

What sort of air filter do you have? I can't remember if you use air purifiers, but maybe that could help as well?

How about if you swapped out jobs with your mom or your sister? Is there a chore they hate to do but you don't mind?

Or is there a family friend that you could, say, fix supper for once a week, and they could tackle the worst of the cleaning/dusting jobs while you cook?

And as you're trying to figure out how to afford a cleaner, don't forget about bartering! Is there some talent that you have that you could swap for an hour of house cleaning for a week? You may be surprised what people are willing to swap … and if the house was routinely cleaned, it might not even take an hour to tidy things up.

  • Marie E Natzke

Cynthia that's a good idea I didn't think of that. I'll have to talk with my friends and see what can be done to help us out. Yes I have an air purifier in my bedroom. It's a Holm Holmes. It has a hepa filter as well as a washable filter in front of the hepa filter.

Hi everyone today was my appointment with the new ENT Doctor. I'm happy to report that it went very well!!!  He put me back on budesonide so I can add it to my sinus rinse. He also wants me to try a nasal spray called Ipratropium. It shuts the nerve down that creates mucus in the sinuses. He told me if this works there is a surgery that can be done to shut the nerve down and then I won't need so much nasal sprays etc.  I don't do really well on nasal sprays they either make me bleed or close my sinuses up. He said my sinuses are packed, but didn't see any pus or infection. My voicebox,  is inflamed and there's redness behind it as well. He thinks it's all From the post nasal drip.  My acid reflux is under control.  But if I'm not better by the end of the week I'm to call him and they'll get me in Friday to get the cat scan of the sinuses to make sure there's nothing else going on. I've used the budesonide already and my nose feeling better but my voice returning will take a while. I'm still coughing as well but it's been better this afternoon..

  • Melissa G

Marie, I am so glad that your appt went so well!  Please keep us updated on how you are doing.

  • LK

So glad you had a good appointment with your new ENT Marie!  Hope the new meds help!

  • Marie E Natzke

I'm still waiting for the nasal spray pharmacy was out of it. But using the budesonide is helping. My sinuses feels better today not as painful. Coughing less so throat feels better, but still no voice

  • Marie E Natzke

It finally came in Tuesday. The first dose was a shock to my system. Opened me up after about a half hour. Was a little dizzy. I didn't use it yesterday but used it tonight. I can only use 1 spray a day. My voice is still bad, but I'm feeling better. I took my humira shot last night. Tomorrow is Physical therapy for my foot. Saw my G P today and I've lost 9 lbs!!

  • LK

Marie,  So glad you are doing better!!  Hope your voice returns in good time.

  • Marie E Natzke

Melissa G…He was using a massage stone on my calf and heel it was ok until he got to a certain area on my heel I was going to tell him to stop but he stopped before I could say to stop. But we had big change in temp as well. My feet are touchy, weather changes I feel in them a lot. And yesterday Was the quilt show in Rosemount Convention center did too much walking feeling it still today. But it Was 60 Friday and last night it went down to 25 above we woke up to snow on the ground.   Winter just doesn't want to leave!!!

  • Marie E Natzke

LK  my voice is still bad….I see allergist in a couple weeks I'm beginning to think I need to look for a different immunologist. Someone that can look at my asthma allergies and this arthritis….

  • LK

Marie,  Bet the quilt show was awesome!  Was thinking it was this weekend.  Hope you enjoyed it!  I am sorry your voice is still not back to what it should be.  Can't hurt to get a second opinion.  Keeping you in my prayers!    Our weather has been up and down and all about, too.

  • Marie E Natzke

LK yes it was but they aren't coming back next year they are looking for a different city…bummed about that. Have to keep a look out for other places to go to.

  • Marie E Natzke

Last month I was at the beauty salon and there was a dog running around. I don't remember what thread I posted this on.  Anyway I was there today for a haircut.  Due to my complaint, and other people speaking up there won't be any dogs there anymore!!!

  • LK

Marie,  Oh drats on the quilting show not coming back next year!  Hope it isn't too far away so you can still go to it.  Would love to see some pictures!!

Good for you on speaking up at the hair salon about that dog.  Glad others joined in.

  • Marie E Natzke

Lol LK….they sure did, she wasn't too happy about it. She asked my beautician what happens when she used hair spray and other products on my hair. My beautician told her she doesn't use any because of her asthma!! All I get are haircuts.

  • LK

Marie,  That's all I get, too, just a hair cut with no products other than shampoo and conditioner which I bring from home since I know those scents don't bother me too much.
