We are having a heat wave and also have nearby wildfires. Yay! I've beenhold up in the house w/ the windows closed and ceiling fans running. Sofar, so good though!

  • GigiGibson

Hi gang, I'm in the bed today. I feel so weak. Finally was diagnosed with bronchitis yesterday evening and started a zpack. Still on prednisone too. Nebs and proair q4 or more. Some episodes last night of coughing where I woke up with my head hanging off the bed! I sleep elevated. I'm worried I'm going to fall out.  Night before I got choked and hubby woke me. My mouth is so dry all night. Think I will get him to get some biotene. Tips on sleeping with cough mania?

Thanks, hope everyone is on an even keel or better!

  • Kathy P

    Oh no! That's miserable!

I hate nocturnal coughing. I sometimes get that w/ my post nasal drip. I have a stack of pillows and try to prop myself up. But I usually sleep on my side, so I wind up rolling and sliding off. Then I'll wake up kind of choking.

I tend to use cough drops like Halls when I get like that. But it's dangerous to fall asleep w/ a hard candy in your mouth!

  • Debby

Working full time but walking inside the hospital from department to department.  I am not taking shortcuts across the parking lot where the hot, humid air is!  Walking the dogs around one block early this week in the humidity and heat and had to use the Albuterol because of coughing so I haven't done it again. Still waiting for my new doc to start.  Still using the corticosteriod inhaler twice a day and Albuterol when needed. Everybody take care out there!

  • K8sMom2002

Gigi — for me, I use Vicks VapoRub during a flare in addition to sleeping almost upright with pillows. Plus I keep water beside me.

Maybe the Vicks is just a placebo effect, but it sort of reminds me of when I was little and my mom would slather me in the stuff. The Biotene ought to help as well. Feel better really quick!

Debby, I hope that doc starts SOON. And I walked yesterday way too early (but even at 9 pm it's nearly 90 and feels hotter. At midnight, it's still in the 80s, and our LOW? It's 75. 😯 )

  • Mandy

Gigi- Sleeping up right sucks! It does stop the coughing fits for me. Are you doing a sinus rinse too? I put the pillows all around me like a recliner chair. Don't forget the lumbar support. When I am really bad I will sleep like that for weeks.  Water and lip chap are helpful by the bed. I like lemon tea with ginger and honey before bed. Something in the honey is supposed to help with sore/hoarse throats.

I am not sure if it is feasible but if you can, take time off work. Pushing yourself to do daily activities is a no no and trying to work on top of this is so hard. The more you push yourself, the harder it is to get on top of symptoms especially with Bronchitis to boot. I am sorry you are struggling so much! I hope those antibiotics kick in quick!!! Take care

  • Nemo88

Hey all well i got some actual sleep my doctor had me drop down to 40 of prednisone which seems to be helping and then gonna aim to go down by 5mg a week for the next 3wks and see how I do.

And Gigi I always drink warm tea with lemon and honey before bed when I have a really bad cough and I there is a medicine I know it by the name Tessalon perles or benzonatate it's a really good cough medicine the doctor can prescribe I find it works best along with steamy showers to help moisten the airways and loosen gunk.

For those of you dealing with heat hopefully relief will come and give you a breather I hope everyone continues to feel well or continue to get better have a great rest of your day.

  • Kathy P

*fingers crossed* that you can continue to wean down Nemo!

And I love honey lemon tea. I keep a jar of "sludge" in my fridge. I chop up lemons and pour honey over it. It sort of turns into this marmalade. I just put a couple spoonfuls in hot water. I love it for loosening things up – sometimes I just hold the warm mug against my chest!

  • Nemo88

That's a good idea I never though about letting the lemon soak in the honey I am gonna make some to have on hand be alot easier lol. I find any want drink like tea or cider are great to drink before bed when I am really coughing alot helps thin things out and loosen it up I also tend to set an alarm to wake me up in order to drink a small glass of water during the night I find that helps as well.

  • Kathy P

I chop up and toss in the ends of lemons when I have them and just keepreplenishing it. I give it a good stir every now and then.

  • Mandy

Hahaha "Sludge" that's totally what it is Kathy! In the cold months between my husband and I,  we go through it like crazy!

Nemo that is great you're doing better and got some sleep!

Stay cool everyone and out of smoke!

  • Jen

Hopefully some of this hot weather will let up soon.  It was actually in the mid 80's in MD today, so much better than the last week or so.

When I get that icky night  time cough, I sometimes take a teaspoon of straight honey.  It seems to coat the throat.  Dh's ENT has him use the tessalon perls that Nemo mentioned.

  • GigiGibson

Hi everyone, thanks for the advice. I've been hydrating and will be taking some honey, lemon and cinnamon at bedtime. Hubby brought me some biotene to boot.

  • Nemo88

Hey quick question does anyone here in the thread know about arthritis and what might help for the burning pain other than pain meds. I have tried heat and ice but nothing works and I can't take any nsaid class meds to help. But my hands are on fire right now I can deal if I have to but if there is something I can try I will .

  • Kathy P

Nemo, are you sure it's arthritis? My mom has neuropathy in her feet and it sounds like what you are describing – burning pain. Can you use topicals like Aspercream or Bengay?

  • GigiGibson

Nemo I haven't heard of burning like that except with nerve pain. Have you had your C spine xrayed? Gabapentin would help. Heat alternating with ice q 20 minutes topically if arthritis. Just thoughts

  • Nemo88

Yup I already take a nerve med and it doesn't help this at all my knuckles are swollen and the burning sensation I was told is because the nerves are being compressed but idk lol as me and my doctors agreed on a while back I'm kind of a medical enigma lol

  • Kathy P

Nerve compression d/t swelling could make sense. Not sure what might help except ice.

  • K8sMom2002

Nemo — I know it sounds kind of odd, but have you tried a capsaicin rub? Web MD suggests that for folks suffering from diabetic neuropathy, and that is similar to the kind of pain you're describing.

Here's the link to their article with other ideas.

Also, how about a TENS unit? When I have a flare up a pinched sciatic nerve, a TENS unit will help disrupt the pain signals. You can get them over the counter now, but I'd mention it to your doctor.

  • K8sMom2002

Gigi, The Mayo Clinic referred to a study which said honey by itself worked as a good cough medicine…

    Here's the link:

I know I've used it when DD was little because most RX cough meds screwed up her sleep. Funny thing: she hates the taste of honey now because it "tastes like medicine." Poor kid. I ruined honey for her!

  • Kathy P

LOL on honey tasting like medicine!I think I need a cup of tea. My throat is feeling really junky. We went out for dinner and the shy in the direction of the fire is looking awful!

  • Nemo88

Oh yeah I can't believe I didn't think of using a tens unit. Thanks for the tip I will definitely give that a try and thanks for the link I will give it look. Thank you

  • Rfinchertaylor

Feeling really miserable in this heat, but my breathing is okay.  Air has been to "thick" to breathe, but getting a break today.

  • Jen

    Hi RFincher,

Welcome to the forums. Sounds like you've been managing ok in this hot weather. Do you find yourself staying inside more or using more meds?

  • K8sMom2002

RFinch! Good to see you! I thought about you the other day when I went hiking for the first time ever – I remembered your photo on the #tackleasthma photo campaign, and it inspired me. To. Keep. Climbing. Up. That. Mountain.

  • K8sMom2002

Nemo, I've been wondering how the new OTC TENS units they're advertising on tv work now. They're designed for backs, though. Don't know how you'd adapt them for your hands …

  • Kathy P

Yay for a break today Rfinchertaylor! Hope it's something fun, or at least relaxing!

I'm headed to the beach! Well, I'm driving by the beach – LOL! I have to pick up da girl from camp. I'm hoping so clean coastal mountain air will do my lungs some good. Last time I picked her up for break, I got there early and walked around camp (a bit hilly). But I'd forgotten my inhaler! Won't make that mistake today

  • GigiGibson

A drive by the ocean sounds lovely. I am proud to report I feel a tad better, the grand baby spent some time cuddled with me, we fed the fish in my outdoor micro pond and she helped me take my neb. Lol. I managed frying some okra for her, a shower, shaving and make up. Even sang a couple lines in there with Adele and SIA. I'm resting now but plan to maybe wipe down my sinks and change my sheets. Pacing myself but trying not to let the bed consume me. I even brought a ten pound hand weight in here lol. I do some lifts in bed. I've got to be better and work next week. Everyone have a great day!

  • GigiGibson

Hi rfincher! I'm a new asthmatic, lucky me but I'm in good company.

Nemo, my doc has me use arnica gel with aspercreme when I pull my back

  • Kathy P

Sounds like a productive day already Gigi – don't overdo it!And I love that your granddaughter helped you w/ your neb! How preciousis that?

  • Lisa K

We just got back from a Disney cruise and everything was perfect with allergies and asthma!!

  • K8sMom2002

Ooooh, Gigi, I love me some fried okra! Don't care for it boiled, but I do like what it will do for a pot of field peas.

Lisa, where'd you cruise to? My sister loves cruises and keeps asking me to give it a whirl.

And way to go, Kathy P, on remembering the inhaler!

  • Kathy P

Awesome Lisa K! Disney is known for being accommodating. Cruises sound fun, but my worry is my tendency for motion sickness!

  • Lisa K

The weather was gorgeous and there were no issues at all with anything. We loved the dolphin encounter at the Atlantis resort in Nassau and the stingray adventure (feeding them an snorkeling with them) in Castaway Cay.

  • Lisa K

They clip the barbs on the stingrays. They ate right out of our hands! It was weird, but fun!

  • K8sMom2002

    Lisa, that sounds so cool!

Checking in to see how things are going for everyone –

Nemo, how are you doing? Any better?

Gigi? Debby? Rachel? Have I missed anyone?

  • GigiGibson

I'm still feeling ragged. Went to urgent care and they had a locums clinician who said asthma is usually not something you develop in your 4th and 5 th generation of life and I need to see a pulmonologist. Well I'm waiting for that. She was baffled and said she didn't see any reason the throw more meds at me when the prednisone and antibiotics don't seem to be working too well. So I spent two hours there paid $25 and got some French fries and a mocha frap. Coloring with my sweet granddaughter and trying to be positive.

  • Mandy

Gigi so sorry to hear things aren't improving. Don't let the "typical" get you down. But it is good to see a lung specialist. Hopefully you will see someone soon! Did they give you a time frame? Fingers crossed it's sooner rather than later.

  • Kathy P

Hugs Gigi – so frustrating! I hope the pulmo can figure out what's going on.

My trip to the beach yesterday was a bust! Got over the mountain and it was socked in w/ clouds and even fog in places. Da girl was ready to go when we got there, so didn't hike around like last time. I have another shot on Wed when I take her back to camp. TG it's the last session – I'm getting tired of doing this drive

Went to the farmer's market this morning. My eyes and nose are really gunky. I don't know what is blooming, but I wish it would stop!

I've been staying in mostly.  Although yesterday I did go to a car show.  About noon I was ready to get inside to an air conditioner.  Lol!

I'm glad I could be an inspiration to you.  I love hiking although with this heatwave I'm playing inside the house.  Lol

  • Debby

Seriously Gigi, she said that?!  It's called adult onset asthma per my pulmonologist!  Hope you get to feeling better soon.

  • Rfinchertaylor

Hope everyone is doing well today.  It is overcast here, but a lot cooler.  Here are some photos I took at the Car & Motorcycle Show I went to on Saturday.  That's my grandson in the stroller.
