Albuterol side effects

Has anyone besides me every had problems with muscle spasm/cramps with albuterol?  Seems it's one of those way down the list of "incidence unknown" things but I can definitely say that's what caused my back spasms-it is getting better but it's happened before and I totally forgot about it.  Quit using the albuterol and they eventually went away-and then I was only using extra albuterol for a couple of days-not the 6 weeks I've been using it every 4 hours now.

Hugs on this, Lynn … do you think it was the increase in the albuterol? Maybe it's a tolerance or dosage level?

It stinks when a go-to medicine doesn't work anymore. What did your doc suggest in the albuterol's place?

I do think it was a dosage level thing-it happens some every time I use it but not this bad but the more I used it, it's like it built up to the level it did.  The albuterol still works good but the muscle pain in my back is just awful.  His suggestion-use it when you need to and we'll talk about it on your March visit.

PLJOHNS – I'm sorry you continue to have muscle spasms/cramps. I haven't had this side effect. Have you tried Xopenex? If so, do you experience the same muscle spasms/cramps? Two of my doctors have recently asked me to alternate between Xopenex and Albuterol. My doctors think that Albuterol is becoming less effective for my asthma. They really don't know if it will be helpful but worth a try. According to my doctors, Xopenex works on one Beta Receptor and Albuterol works on 2 Beta Receptors.

MMKB, how very interesting on the alternating between Xopenex and Albuterol … how long do you wait before you swap? Do you think it's helping?

MMKB-thanks for the info-I have used and still do use xopenex without as much of the problems-I wasn't aware they worked on different receptors so that is new to me.  I intend to have a long discussion with my pulmo next week about the albuterol/xopenex and what to do.

K8SMOM2002 – I haven't noticed a difference. I usually try to space the treatments at least 4-6 hours if possible.

PLJOHNS – Please let me know what your pulmo thinks about the Albuterol and Xopenex..

Hey @Pljohns wondering if you've had your potassium levels checked? Apparently which in turn can cause muscle cramps. Wondering if that is the case– if potassium supplements may help you in the future?

  • Pljohns

It was checked about a year ago and was fine and I hadn't thought about albuterol and prednisone reducing potassium levels.  Easy way for me to find out-banana's.  Normally if i eat a banana, the cramps get worse because potassium isn't low but if it helps, then I can go next door and get them checked.  Thanks for the reminder Megan!
