Sinus Infections and Clogged Ears

I am really trying not to lose my mind today! I have been sick all week and it could not have come at a worse time!

So on Tuesday, I was diagnosed with a sinus infection, a double ear infection and bronchitis. Yes, I am an overachiever…

I am finally feeling human today, but I woke up with my left ear "clogged"! It is driving me crazy! I am taking Mucinex D Max Strength, twice a day, xyzal and they changed my antibiotic from Omnicef to Doxycycline. The Omnicef was hurting my stomach.

I really thought by now my ears would be doing better, the pain is gone but this pressure/clogging has got to go!

I have not had an ear infection since I was little! How long does it take for the pressure and drainage to clear from the ears?

Oh Melissa, I'm so sorry! I've had a horrible time with ear pressure/drainage so that I have had trouble hearing out of my right ear. The dr said it's allergies because there's no infection, but it will typically get completely clogged and it takes a few days for it to get better. It drives me nuts because it messes with my equilibrium too. Hopefully it will get better once the antibiotic starts working. Sending lots of get better !

Thanks dory! The dr was very surprised that I was already taking Mucinex D, apparently, my sinuses and ears looked terrible. I haven't had a sinus infection in years.

Is it this yoyo weather? I had a plugged up cloggy feeling left ear late this morning. It went away. My left nasal passage seems a bit stuffed .I hope I don't end up with an infection.

Melissa,  Could it be clogged with wax?  My DH has that happen often and he has to go to the ENT to have it cleaned out if the Debrox ear was removal aid doesn't help after a few days.  I hope it clears up soon for your trip!

Maybe since you had so many things going on it will take an extra day or so before it clears up?  Can you call your doctor and ask him?

Thanks ladies! I am not really feeling any better today. I did call the dr, and he suggested not taking my antihistamine for a few days so the Mucinex D can work better. I can feel the fluid in my left ear moving. I thought for sure last night my either would either pop or rupture. Neither happened.

Deborah, I am not sure if it was the yo-yo weather or I got a virus that triggered everything. But whatever happened, happened very quickly.

Melissa- I hope the fluid in your ear clears or drains soon. Sorry you are going through this. I know it's no fun. Try to have a nice Sunday!

Thanks Deborah! We are currently away taking our oldest to college. Today is the calm before the storm. She moves into the dorm tomorrow.

  • Melissa G

It does, doesn't it! And we are here during a "winter storm". Luckily we didn't get much, but back home did.

My left ear is still clogged! Getting "sick" when you are older is no fun at all! I am getting extremely whiny and cranky from all of this congestion. The doctor keeps telling me to be patient and finish out the antibiotics. Oh, and rest. I laughed, rest, I have no idea what that word is.

REST= Really Edgy So Tired. Sorry Melissa! Hope you feel better soon! I know what it's like to feel the pressure of being busy when you're not feeling well.

Hugs, Melissa … it can be so aggravating to have a clogged ear. It can take a while for a decongestant to work. I've had to take several days of Sudafed before my ears would unblock.

Deborah, that is so funny! It makes me smile!

Melissa-so sorry you still feel so awful.   I hear you on the "rest"-what is that, how do you do it?  I never figured it out.   that you feel better soon,.

Deborah, thank you! I needed that laugh!

I know this too shall pass, I just want it to pass a little quicker!

Thanks Lynn! The pressure is subsiding and I have more drainage which I guess is good that it is moving but my lungs don't like it.

I completely understand the feeling. More often than not I can't yawn completely and I can't pop my ears. Sometimes out of desperation I try until tears and air are coming out of my eyes. I have terrible vertigo too So as far as that off balance no equilibrium feeling…I TOTALLY understand.

  • Deborah Bartlett

Hearing the word yawn…with my COPD and asthma, I haven't been able to do a full yawn in over 5 years because of my shortness of breath.

I had no idea others were experiencing this too. I'm glad there's nothing wrong with me besides what I'm used to

Hi Echo! Welcome to AAFA! So glad that you found us!

Does the vertigo cause your ears not to pop? That has to be very frustrating!

  • Deborah Bartlett

Melissa, I hope that your ear popping brings relief. So sorry that it hurt. 😥 I pray that Bekah will get a little better each day. Poor girl! That virus sounds nasty. You all deserve a break from illness. Sending my best to you along with germ free hugs!!! ❤❤❤

Melissa-so glad your ears popped-even though it hurt!  Hope Bekah gets a little better every day

Thanks Lynn! I think nebbing her with saline has helped a lot. And I have run extra IV fluids.

Welcome, Echo! What has your doctor said about your vertigo? There can be several reasons for vertigo, and some of them are really easily addressed at home … your doctor could show you how.

It was a good feeling when my ear finally popped! It hurt but the pressure was finally gone.
