Severe allergic reaction to baby’s breath flowers

Help!  I've had 4 severe allergic reactions to baby's breath flowers.  My allergy doctor is not familiar with this type of allergy.  Is there anyone out there who is?  I have rx for emergency epi and inhaler, but I would love to know of some treatment that would lessen the severity of the reactions.  Thank you, CLea

Hi Clea! Welcome to the AAFA forums!

I moved your post to the "Allergy Forum" so you would get more replies.

Have you talked with your doctor about taking allergy shots? How often do you come in contact with Baby's Breath flowers?

Wow, Clea, how did you track down the cause of your allergic reactions?

For severe allergies, doctors typically advise avoiding the trigger. Since baby's breath is an environmental allergen, could you talk to your doctor about whether there are immunotherapy shots that would work with you?

    Hey Melissa,

I have spoken with my doctor and he said he couldn't order any kind of shot to give me, that he has been an allergy doctor for 30 years and has never heard of this allergy.  As far as coming in contact with it, it's amazing how many everyday, ordinary places you go, that its there.  Most flower arrangements, have baby's breath in them, therefore, hospitals, funeral homes, grocery stores, etc. have them.  It seems like especially with Valentine's Day coming up, it's everywhere.

It started at my son's wedding last June.  I ordered baby's breath from Sam's Wholesale and when it arrived at my home, I unpacked it and put in water to keep until we made the arrangements.  I had to go to the ER then, and 3 more times, since I've came in contact with it.  It was the only flower used at his wedding, so i've done a process of elimination to determine what I'm allergic to.  My doctor tested me for several common allergies and I wasn't allergic to anything.  Also, the blood work showed that I don't have a high susceptibility to be allergic. But if I go anywhere near baby's breath, my throat starts to close up.  The doctor said he doesn't know of anyplace he could get what he needs for the shots….like he can't order it.  He has done some research on-line and just found one article about a few people being allergic to this.

I did wear one while visiting at the hospital yesterday.  It seemed to help some.  I still had a reaction but not as severe.

I got it at the hospital when I went in.  Are there certain types of mask I need?

Hi Clea! I know a lot of people here including myself have used the brand RZ Masks to help keep out scents, irritants, and allergens. They filter out smaller particles than surgical masks, and this brand has a really good fit so as to reduce leakage. Make sure you order the right size if you do order them. Also, I would run it by your allergist anyways, and avoid the flowers the best you can and keep your emergency meds. You coyld always check another allergist for a second opinion on the shots– I dont know much about shots myself, but sometimes younger doctors or dictors who work at universities can be privvy to more updated information, so it might be wirth trying a secind opinion. It sounds like a really tough and severe allergy to have and it is scary! (I have really severe pet dander allergy so I totally get that aapect!). You may want to try to keep skin covered as well in those situations.

For the RZ mask,  the Amazon link is here:

Thank you so much for the link to the mask!  I will order one ASAP!  Thanks again for the information!  You've been very helpful!

CLEA,  I use an RZMask as well but for me that style just didn't fit my head and face so I use the RXMask dual strap style -

It does a fabulous job keeping out scents and irritants.  Hope this helps!  Please let us know how you are doing!

Ditto! – I'll never forget the time I was asked to sing at a funeral, and I made the mistake of sitting on the pulpit – (where I was in very close proximity to all of the flowers), and by the time I was supposed to sing, I could barely get "Amazing Grace" out of my mouth…

It was not only scary for me that I might go into a full-blown attack, but it was also embarrassing, because that was the absolute WORSE rendition of that beautiful song that I've EVER done!!!

So, as much as I love a gorgeous floral arrangement, I told Hubby to please not ever bring me any more flowers, and I try to avoid them (in public places) at any cost.

I completely understand how you feel! I’m missing a funeral today, due to the possibility of it being in a floral arrangement.

Clea, so sorry for your loss and not being able to attend the funeral.

Has the mask you ordered come in?

  • CLea

Good morning,  I'm doing good.  I have avoided public places during this Valentine's season.   Thank you for asking!

  • Melissa G

You are very wise Clea! Besides the flowers, there are so many bugs and viruses going around!

Hi, I haven’t worn it yet.  I guess I’m a little embarrassed by the looks of it.  However, I have an upcoming trip planned that will involve an airport, so I plan to wear it then.  I find myself just avoiding going anywhere other than work.  I’m buying everything on-line😆

Thank you for asking. Have a nice day!
