post nasal drip cough – how do you make it stop?

DD2 and 3 had colds that they oh so kindly shared with me a couple weeks ago.  I had some pretty bad sinus pressure that seems to have resolved, but I am left with this lingering tickle in my throat that makes me want to cough. I happened to have an appointment with my primary care doctor this afternoon.  He checked my lungs – clear, my nose – clear and my throat – lots of post nasal drip.  He suggested adding flonase to my regimen (I take zyrtec and singulair daily) and lozenges.  Any other tips?

My doc has suggested a weird combo that tends to work for me: decongestants and orange juice. The decongestants help drain all the stuff that would collect, and that helps my sinuses get over the initial inflammation sooner. The orange juice … Maybe because she knows I'm not crazy about drinking water?

I will keep those tips in mind. Fortunately, this go round, the cough isn't super persistent, it's more that the post nasal drip is just really annoying and I feel like I need to cough to get rid of that tickle in the throat.

Jen, just a thought — DD's allergist just prescribed her a nasal antihistamine called astelin. It doesn't create a rebound reaction like nasal decongestant sprays do, and it may be something you could do to treat the congested nose so you wouldn't have that tickle to begin with.

I will keep that in mind.  The odd thing is that I don't feel congested at all.  It's almost like it's coming from the far areas of my sinuses and just heading right to the back of my throat.  The good thing is that it hasn't been as bad the last couple of days.  DD2 had the cough for a couple weeks too, so maybe that's just the variation of this particular thing.

Gargling with warm salt water can do wonders. It is soothing, and kills germs, and helps clear things. Sometimes I wish I would do it every night.

I also keep this chloroseptic throat spray in my medicine cabinet, it works great for sore throats, but one time I used it just for acid-reflux-pain along with my reflux meds, and it worked great, it numbs the throat a little so any throat pain or annoyance goes away.

Good idea on the throat spray…I may have to try it when the cough acts up like that.

Well … jury is still out on the antihistamine spray, but hopefully it will help. Shea, thanks for the reminder about salt water gargle … I know I've used baking soda and water in the past as a gargle.

Now that's it getting to be cold and flu season, I'd love to hear some more suggestions for this.

Me too 😵 I thougt I beat the sickness, and maybe I did and this is just another one, but my icky cough came back pretty good this morning, and my wheezing has gotten worse again, and I dont wanna go back up on prednisoooone, boo!!!! Ive got a few tricks to try out first:

Im going to add an extra afternoon nebulizer treatment (I can do them 3x day as needed) and try mucinex and drinking lots of fluids to keep things clear and moving. Also extra rest. And some kinda hot garlicy, peppery, vitamin-y soup for dinner.

I just washed the sheets yesterday, and today im going to vacuum and mop so the house will be clean and air fresh as possible. And then Im going to take a Dr. Teals eucalyptus bath. Hopefully I can do that all today, and that will help me!!!

Jen, hows your household doing with the sicknesses, did your DS kick it, or go to the doctor?

I sneezed like crazy yesterday after opening the windows, so Im thinking there are some allergens out there messing with me, so I closed eveything up. It's hard because temperature is so perfect out there!! But, I did open them in the morning and I think that is one of the times Im not supposed to open them because allergens peak in the morning. Ill have to refresh my memory.

Shea, I hear you! I really regret not being able to open windows on those nice fall days!

And the spicy, garlicky soup sounds yum! My favorite comfort food when I'm all stuffed up is Chinese hot and sour soup — here's a link to a that I tweaked the other day when my DH was all stuffed up last week.

    Here were all my tweaks:

    • I used fresh baby portobello mushrooms instead of shiitake
    • I used potato starch instead of cornstarch
    • I used ground ginger instead of fresh (was out of fresh )
    • I left out the tofu completely because I didn't have any on hand.
    • I swapped the Sriracha (I was out — hearing a theme yet?) for bottled chili sauce
    • I added onion, and I sauteed the mushrooms, garlic and onion in olive oil before I added the broth.

All those swaps, and it was STILL good and it really opened up DH's head. Either the next morning was Day 4 of a cold (when you start to feel better anyway) or my soup was a miracle worker, because he woke up the next morning a brand new man.

Shea – he did finally kick that sickness and went back to school this week. He still has a little bit of a junky cough, but he's back into his wild man mode, so I know he's feeling better.
