Mother’s Day is Coming…

It is hard to believe, but Mother's Day is right around the corner! What plans do you have for next weekend?

We are going camping for a few days. I so need a getaway.

I am going to send my mother her Mother's Day flowers she just loves it. I, however will not be celebrating mothers day for myself. Its not fun for me anymore.

We will have family over and DH may grill something.  He just took the grill out of winter storage and is testing it out this weekend!

I get a double whammy-Mother’s Day falls on our our 23rd anniversary this year so I get two in one.  You all will think I’m nuts but I told DH I wanted to go to IHOP and eat.  Our whole family loves having breakfast for dinner and it would be a treat not to cook it myself and it’s a place that won’t break the bank for the four of us.  DH and I only do cards for anniversary so no big deal.

I have made Mother’s Day cards for my mom and MIL and will get those in the mail this week.  We are rebuilding my MIL’s computer for her for her Mother’s Day and I’ll get my mom something when they are up Labor Day.  I can’t buy clothes for her without her trying them on (she’s in a wheelchair and has no use of one arm so clothes are a challenge).  I always take her shopping for the day and will get her something then.

@My Zy, I'm sorry Mother's Day is not fun for you anymore.

Lisa, I love grilling out. We don't have a grill at home, but at the campground, and we grill every night we are there.

Lynn, I love breakfast dinner! IHOP is a great idea!

This is the first year we are going away for Mother's Day. I bought myself some new clothes and shoes, and will get a few days away. Perfect combo.

Lynn, An early Happy 23rd Anniversary to you and your DH!!

Sounds like a great meal to me, too!!

Thank you-can't believe it's been 23 years.  I found the BEST LOOKING cake recipe this morning that I'm going to make myself-vanilla cake with strawberries between the layers and chipped in the icing.  I've lost 12 pounds so i'm going to splurge and enjoy it Mothers Day.

  • LK

Lynn,  That cake sounds perfect!  Is is a from-scratch cake or do you use a store-bought cake?

Good for you getting down to a good weight!!!    It is so much harder to get rid of those extra pounds the older I get and so much easier to add them!!

  • Melissa G

Lynn, that cake sounds delicious! I agree with Lisa, it is so much harder to lose weight as we get older. Great job for slimming down!

  • Pljohns

It is from scratch and has real butter in the icing so there is no way it's lowfat but it sure looks good!

  • Pljohns

This one is made with a cake mix

Here's the one from scratch-don't know if I'll tackle it or not but it sure sounds good!

@My Zy  I'm with Melissa … I hate that Mother's Day isn't fun for you anymore. I hope this day will be different — or at least not painful! Maybe you can do something nice for yourself?

Lynn, on 23 years and congrats! I think that sounds like a perfect way to celebrate! I don't know what sort of cake you like, but if you want a no-fail from scratch yellow cake that's about as easy as a box cake mix, you ought to try Kathy P's — I use the one with eggs and butter in it. It is SOOO good and so tasty and soooo easy. I couldn't bake a decent cake from scratch to save my life except for my step mother's 6 egg pound cake , and Kathy P graciously shared the recipe with me.

My DH would eat it straight out of the pan!

Lisa, I love a laid back "grill celebration!"

I'd forgotten that Mother's Day was upon us! Not sure what we'll do. Eating out is hard for us because of DD's food allergies.

I may ask for us to go on a hike or some sort of day trip …

All these cake recipes sound so good!  Will have to pick one to try first!

I found another one that really sounds good-light and cool-it's a roll (like a jelly roll) that is white cake with cook whip and strawberries rolled up in it.  I may actually do that one since it sounds so light-

  • LK

Would you mind sharing that recipe, too, Lynn?  With this warm weather something cool and light sounds perfect!

  • My Zy

Thanks Melissa and Lynn for the kind words but sorry to say Mother's Day along with any other holiday will never be the same for me again. It's just painful.

  • Pljohns

My Zy-I’m sorry holidays are so tough.  Maybe you can do something to make it a little better.  I know when things hurt, I love tulips, so I have a tendency to buy a $5 planter of tulips from Publix.  I enjoy them while they are growing in the planter and then I plant them and enjoy them year after year.  I know it can’t take the hurt away but maybe something small will help at least some.
