Allergy Eye Drops

It is nearly August, and I should not be dealing with allergy eyes! But with the last week we have had torrential rain and my allergies are in full swing. I hate having a mold allergy. Anyway, for some reason my right eye is always worse. I try not to use allergy eye drops, because they dry my eyes out so much but I don't think I have much choice. I have patanol eye drops and will use them twice a day but is there anything else out there that doesn't dry the eyes out so much? Bendaryl works too but I don't want to be so tired during the day. I have talked with my allergist and eye dr and they just keep recommending the patanol.

I have to use eye drops because I have high eye pressure (steroids), and they dry out my eyes terribly. My eye doctor gave me lubricant eye drops (Fresh Kote), and it works pretty well. I hope you find something that works!

My ophthalmologist has me use be allergy drops as well as lubricant drops.  One thing – you need to wait about 5 mins between so one doesn’t wash the other out.

DD uses Alaway eye drops … it's supposed to last 12 hours, so she uses drops in the AM and before bed. You have to put it in and wait for a few minutes before you put your contacts in, but it really has helped her.

Her pediatrician wanted her to try cromolyn eye drops, but her allergist suggested she use these because she wears contacts.

DD also uses saline drops to as a rewetting drop for her eyes, since she developed an allergy to the contact lens cleaning system that had rewetting drops as part of its line.

I saw the eye dr today. He suggested I try "Zaditor" eye drops. I stopped at the store on the way home and picked up a box. I will start using them tonight and will let you know how I like them.

I have been using the zaditor eye drops since Tues evening and I really like them. They help with my allergy eyes and they are not drying my eyes out!

I have used Ketotifen- it blurs your eyes for a while but I think it is pretty effective in controlling redness of the eyes and watering. They didn't really dry out my eyes thankfully and I already have dry eyes haha.

Hi.  I am new here and to allergies.  I just saw a dr and was told I have seasonal allergies.  My eyes are RED.  He suggested Visine Allergy.  I have been using but it's not really help the redness.  It did help with the itch.  So now I am looking for advice on the reducing the redness in my eyes.  TIA.

    Hi Silvia! Welcome to AAFA!

I am sorry you are dealing with allergy eyes! This allergy season has been really bad. First, I would check back with your doctor to let them know what is going on. I have had good look with the Zaditor eye drops, for me the redness and the itching is gone and they do not leave me with dry eyes.

@silvia, Welcome to the AAFA forums! We're so glad you found us! Have you tried saline eye drops to wash away the allergens?

Which doctor did you see, an allergist or an eye doctor? Here is some information from the AAFA website that you might find helpful:

    • (includes information about how to treat eye allergies)
    • American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology's Press Release

To help those suffering with eye allergies, Dr. Bielory advises physicians to administer the Ocular Surface Disease Index. This is a standardized, easily performed questionnaire that allows doctors to evaluate symptoms and diagnose eye diseases such as conjunctivitis and dry eye syndrome

This tool helps us to discover the cause, not just relieve symptoms, said Dr. Bielory. From there we can get to the source of the allergy and fix it with one of many treatment options available to our patients, avoidance of the allergen, pharmacotherapy (drugs or medicine), or immunotherapy (allergy shots).

Did your physician give you the Ocular Surface Disease Index to complete? I'm hoping your eye symptoms get better soon!

Silvia, how are your eyes? Have you been able to find anything to help with the redness?
